NSUKKA – Chief Ike Ekweremadu, the Deputy Senate President, has urged political parties in the country to practice internal democracy in picking their candidates to strengthen the country’s democracy.
Ekweremadu said this in Nsukka on Wednesday in a lecture entitled: “Key Governance Issues in Nigeria, My Perspective” at the 54th founder’s Day of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
According to him, the viability of political parties rests on internal democracy, respect for party rules and other members
“The choice belongs exclusively to voters in true democratic process.
“Party members should have the freedom and liberty to choose their leaders and flag bearers at the next elections,” he said.
The deputy senate president urged Nigerians to work together to ensure a better, secured and more prosperous Nigeria.
“By the wisdom and tenacity of all of us, Nigeria will be better; nobody can save Nigeria but Nigerians.
“I urge all to participate in this desirable and eminent task of making Nigeria greater,’’ he said.
Ekweremadu advocated decentralisation of Nigerian police to enhance security.
“It was since abolition of regional police that armed robbery and other related crime rise.
“To me, every state, local government and big institutions should have its own police; it will be easier to fish out criminals since they know who is who.
“The problem of police today is not money but structural,’’ he said.
He commended the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan for taking Nigeria to greater heights, adding that it was during his regime that the county became the biggest economy in Africa. “Nigeria is destined to be permanently one forever and no amount of threat by terrorists will alter it,” he said.
In a remark, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Benjamin Ozumba, commended the deputy senate president for his numerous contributions to national development.
Ozumba said that his administration main mission was to make UNN the best in Africa through academic excellence by ensuring good environment for teaching and learning.
“We will continue to pursue the dreams and aspiration of our university founding father anchored on restoration of dignity of man,” he said.
