KATSINA – The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), has criticised Katsina and Kano state governments for implementing tenure policy for directors at the local government level.
The National President of the union, Mr Ibrahim Kalil, was speaking on Wednesday in Kastina at the opening ceremony of the 7th Quadrennial Delegates Conference of the Katsina State chapter of the body.
Khalil said that Katsina and Kano state governments were the only ones in the country that implemented the system, which he described as “an injustice”. He urged the two governments to rescind the decision and revert to the status quo.
He said that as the states having the highest number of local governments in the country, Kano and Katsina “ are supposed to be role models in proper administration of local governments.’’
Earlier, the Katsina State Chairman of the union, Mr Aliyu Haruna, also urged the state government to review the tenure system.
Haruna, however, praised the state government for prompt payment of staff salaries, training and re-training of personnel.
NAN reports that under the new policy, a person appointed as director in a local government will spend four years before he is appointed to serve for another four years based on satisfactory performance. (NAN)
