Abuja – The Mauritius Meteorological Services says the Indian Ocean Island is still on class three categories warning for the fall of the Cyclone Berguitta early noon of Thursday.
The services said in a bulletin that the tropical storm Berguitta was centred at about 15 kilometres off the coast of Souillac.
A resident of Mauritius’ Central Flacq, Ms Ashita Rughoo, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the gushing wind of the cyclone started on Wednesday evening.
‘’Since the Class 2 warning was announced, people have teamed up to offer emergency assistance. Temples and Mosques as well as social organisations are prepared to help with food and rescue.
‘’The government security services like the SMF, GIPM, Police, Fire and Rescue services have been on there feet since. This morning La Gaulette and Camp Fauquereaux bridges are over flooded and inaccessible,’’ she said.
Rughoo said that the police have initiated evacuation procedures for the following areas Quatre Soeurs, Vallee Pitot and Chitrakoot.
Active cloud band associated with the Berguitta are expected to cross the Island by midday (8:00 hr GMT), cause heavy showers, and an increase in wind gust.
The meteorological services warned that the cyclone may blow wind from the northern sector at a speed of 50 km/h and gust may reach 120km/h in heavy showers.
It, therefore, advised the public to maintain all precaution and not to go to sea, as it would be very high with heavy swells.
