Lagos – An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Friday remanded a bricklayer, Sulaimon Rasheed, 22, at the Kirikiri Prisons in Lagos, charged with burglary and stealing.
Rasheed’s plea was, however, not taken.
The Magistrate, Mrs O. A. Akokhia, who gave the ruling, said that the accused should remain behind bars until the next adjourned date.
Rasheed, who gave no fixed address, is facing charges of break-in and stealing.
The Prosecutor, Insp. Benedict Aigbokhan, had told the court that the accused committed the offences at 1.00 a.m. on Oct. 26, 2017 at No. 29, Meiran Road, Meiran in Agege, near Lagos.
He said that the accused broke into the shop of one Emmanuel Nkwudu to steal.
The prosecutor explained that the complainant on getting to his shop discovered it had been burgled.
“Rasheed broke into the complainant’s shop using a plier, razor blade and other dangerous weapons,’’ the prosecutor said.
According to Aigbokhan, the stolen items include a generator set and property, all valued at N25, 000, belonging to the complainant.
He alleged that the accused was later apprehended within the same locality by residents and handed over to the police for questioning.
The offences contravened Sections 287 and 307 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused may be sentenced to three years imprisonment, if found guilty, according to Section 287 of the Criminal Law.
The case was adjourned until Feb. 21 for a review of facts and sentencing.
