MAIDUGURI – The Catholic Diocese of Maiduguri on Thursday donated relief materials to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in camps in Maiduguri.
The affected people are in Maiduguri Government College, Government Girls’ Secondary School’, Maiduguri and NYSC camp.
The Bishop of the diocese, the Rt. Rev. Oliver Dashe, presented the materials to the people at the camps.
Dashe said that the gesture was aimed at ameliorating the sufferings of the IDPs, who had been forced out of their homes due to the lingering Boko Haram insurgency.
He said that the insurgency had affected adherents of both Islam and Christianity and that the diocese felt duty bound to come to the aid of the victims.
“The Catholic Diocese of Maiduguri had a large share of the Boko Haram persecution.
“As a church we are going through a severe moment of persecution.
“We are praying and hoping that things will change,’’ Dashe said.
Dashe said that his visit to the camps was to show concern and love to the victims.
“The mission of the church is redemptive and to all no matter one’s religious inclination, belief or creed,” he said.
Dashe urged the victims to continue in their prayers for a divine intervention toward ending the insurgency.
The items donated by the church included bags of rice, maize, blankets, buckets, among others. (NAN)
