ABUJA – Power outage on Thursday disrupted the opening day of the Nigeria International Badminton Championships (NIBC) in Abuja.
The championships holding at the Gymnasium Hall at Package B of the National Stadium Complex is expected to end on Oct. 27.
The championships which is in its third edition is being organised by the Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN) in collaboration with the Badminton World Federation (BWF).
The championships’ preliminary round, which saw the Nigerian team competing against each other for a spot in the championships proper, had barely begun before it was disrupted by power outage.
In the matches played during the period, Paul Kekeke beat Folorunsho Opeyeri 3-2, while Kayode Abubakar thrashed Sunday Musa 3-0.
Also, Alaya Idris beat Olatunji Fadipe 3-2, while Abdulhamid Musa defeated Kabiru Usman 3-1 in the men’s singles preliminary round.
But after all efforts to restore power proved abortive, the competition’s Day One had to come to an abrupt end, with officials calling for a postponement of proceedings.
The preliminary round will now continue on Friday with Nigerian players continuing to slug it out for a place in the main draw which will commence later in the day.
Six countries, namely Nigeria, Egypt, Uganda, Czech Republic, Switzerland and France, are taking part in the championships.(NAN)
