ABUJA (Sundiata Post) This has been on my mind lately. The US has BLM – “Black Lives Matter”. I think Nigeria needs NUM – “Nigerian Unity Matters”. Now, most all of you from Nigeria that read this, no matter who you are or where you are from are well educated, smart, and pretty open minded. I am NOT trying to beat you up with this, but I am going to say what I think.
When it comes to corruption, when it comes to ripping off Nigerians, when it comes to all of that the elites in Nigeria, the politicians, are pretty well united. Your Senate gets a ludicrous amount of pay for what they do. There are 109 Nigerian Senators, I am guessing this has been the case since 1999? How many tribes? How many religions? How many areas? Yet they milk Nigerians for all they are worth and finally one man (Shehu Sani) calls out the ridiculous amount of money they get “off the record”. In no democracy that I am aware of would such sums be paid to ANYONE without accountability. That is just the Senate, what of the rest? Your equivalent of “The House”? Your State governments? How does man after man get away with all of the ripping off that they do WITHOUT others knowing? Don’t you think that Igbos know when Yorubas are doing the ripping off? That Kanuris know when the Fulanis are ripping off? Christians when Christians, Muslims when Muslims, Muslims when Christians, and Christians when Muslims, and whoever when whoever are doing the ripping off? That is UNITY.
Amongst the Nigerian electorate, there isn’t unity. It is every tribe for itself. It’s every religion for itself. It’s every region for itself. Kanuris would rather elect a Kanuri crook then an honest Igbo. Yorubas would rather elect a Yoruba crook then an honest <insert minority tribe here>. A Christian would rather elect a Christian thief then an honest Muslim. A Muslim would rather elect and support a Muslim robber than an honest Christian or worse yet, those who are different, people won’t even look at.
The leaders, when elected, the people in power, play those differences among Nigerians like “a harp from hell”. (quoting from Batman Returns).
NUM – Nigerian Unity Matters. There is a Christian saying that “A house divided against itself cannot stand”. The same goes for Nigeria. As long as the electorate, the “people” are divided, Nigeria will UNDERACHIEVE.
Sure, Nigeria can split up but then what? The same crooks that are running the country now would be running the individual countries. A new generation, new ideas need to take over. NUM. Many of you are the future of Nigeria and know this. Think of what I am saying, and feel free to comment, critique, praise, whatever. **
**I RARELY mention tribes, religions, etc. in Nigeria, but for this write up, I felt it appropriate.
Take care all!
