FRSC to enforce ban on sale of alcohol in FCT motor parks

ABUJA – Mrs Susan Ajenge, the FCT Sector Commander of the Federal Roads Safety Commission (FRSC), on Wednesday, said the Command would enforce the ban on sale of alcohol at motor parks in the territory.

Ajenge said this in Abuja at the 2014 Ember Months sensitisation rally organised by the FCT Command of the FRSC.

She said the command was already working with transport unions at the parks and the police to ensure the relocation of sellers of alcohol from the parks as part of measures to ensure safety on the highways.

She added that “we totally condemn the sale of alcohol at the parks; in fact, we are already in partnership with unions at motor park on the need to relocate sellers.

“We are also working with the police to enforce the order in case they refuse to relocate after the time limit given to them.’’

She attributed most of the Road Traffic Crash (RTC) in the country to drunkeness and recklessness on the part of motorists.

She said the Ember months rally was part of efforts to ensure reduced RTC especially in the last quarter of the year when there was increased vehicular movement across the country.

“This rally is part of our practical measures to call the attention of road users on the dangers they are exposed to during this period and to help them adopt the necessary attitude that will guarantee their safety,’’ the sector commander said.

She dismissed suggestions that there was misery around the Ember months that led to increased accidents, insisting that the attitude of motorists and increased vehicular movements were responsible.

The 2014 Ember months sensitisation rally has “Road Safety is a Shared Responsibilty: It Depends on You’’ as its theme. (NAN)
