LAGOS – A World Squash Federation referee, Tahir Khandaza, on Wednesday described the standard of play at the ongoing Lagos State International Squash Classics as impressive.
Khandaza made the remark in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere Lagos.
“The standard of the game at this competition is impressive; I have seen so much diversity in these players, which is good for the image of squash in the country.
“Though it could be better, but I am impressed with what I have seen so far; it has been exciting moments all the way.
“Based on what I have seen in the women category, I expect the men’s category too to be exciting,” Khandaza said.
Meanwhile, in the opening matches of the competition, Nigeria’s Lola Ajayi defeated Kamal Khan of Pakistan, 3-0, while Udeme James also defeated Dunni Okikiola 3-0 in another encounter.
In the men’s category, Muhammad Vasio Khan of Pakistan retired after the second set, in a match against Idowu Enimakure.
Khan told NAN that jet lag was responsible for his loss.
“I was too tired after a long trip from Pakistan to Nigeria, but it is okay; I am looking forward to my next game.
“I like the people here, they are friendly; I look forward to coming back next year,’’ he said.
The 2nd Lagos International Classic, which served off on Nov. 3, will end on Nov. 8.(NAN)
