New York – Dozens have died and more than 10,000 people have been uprooted by flooding in North Korea, the UN said on Friday.
UN humanitarian agencies are planning to expand support after Pyongyang asked for international assistance on Wednesday.
Thousands of homes have been damaged and destroyed after heavy rains at the end of August caused the flooding in the North and South Hwanghae provinces, Farhan Haq said in New York.
A joint assessment by the UN and North Korean government found that help is needed with food, water, health, sanitation and shelter.
The UN already runs aid projects in North Korea, where it says more than 10 million people – or 40 per cent of the population – require humanitarian assistance.
One in five children in the country suffers stunted growth because of chronic malnutrition, according to the UN.
