ABUJA – The Ministry of Water Resources said in Abuja on Wednesday that it would continue to to create awareness and build capacity to ensure sustainable river basin management.
The Minister of Water Resources, Mrs Sarah Ochekpe, said this in goodwill message to the opening of two-day regional sensitisation workshop on “Trans-boundary Water Security and Cooperation in West African.’’
“The ministry is going to support the efforts being contributed by Lake Chad Basin Commission and the Niger Basin Authority to ensure that the environment is sustainable in the use of trans-boundary water.’’
Represented by Mrs Ojowo Alice, Deputy Director in the ministry, Ochekpe commended organisers of the workshop, adding that the outcome would improve water usage in the West Africa.
Prof. Oladapo Afolabi, Chairman, Governing Board of Regional Centre for Integrated River Basin Management (RC-IRBM), said the centre planned to promote effective and efficient water management strategies.
He said the strategies would be promoted within and across river basins, at the local, state, national, regional and international levels.
Afolabi said RC-IRBM was established as UNESCO Category II Water Centre to promote effective and efficient integrated river basin management for sustainable water resources development and management.
The workshop is jointly organised by UNESCO Regional Office in Abuja and RC-IRBM, Kaduna. (NAN)
