SOKOTO-The Sokoto North Local Government in Sokoto State plans to set up a high-powered inter-agency committee to reduce voter apathy during the 2015 general elections.
The committee will also seek to stem the tide of the high number of cases of invalid votes cast by mostly illiterate eligible voters.
The Caretaker Chairman of the local government, Alhaji Aminu Ibrahim, disclosed this in Sokoto on Thursday when he addressed newsmen on the council’s strategies to ensure hitch-free 2015 general polls.
” It is unfortunate that most of the eligible voters do stay away from the polling stations on the actual election day.
” This is a gross violation of any citizen’s civic responsibilities to his or her nation.
” This is also inimical to the growth and development of the nation’s nascent democracy and it must stop in 2015,” Ibrahim, lamented.
The chairman also stated that the committee would sensitise the eligible voters to how to properly cast their votes and for the candidates of their choices.
Ibrahim further decried that the problem of illiteracy, especially among women eligible voters, was largely responsible for the high cases of invalid votes.
” The women have an advantage of a higher population over men and they always come out en masse and cast their votes on election days.
” Unfortunately, most of the votes cast by the women will later turn out to be declared as invalid,” he added.
Ibrahim stated that the committee would embark on a series of enlightenment campaigns to sensitise all the eligible voters, to mobilise them for proper voting. ( NAN)
