LAGOS – The Karate Federation of Nigeria (KFN) on Wednesday attributed the dearth of activities in the federation to lack of assistance from corporate bodies and philanthropists.
Anthony Idaye, KFN Secretary, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, that the situation was responsible for the inability of the federation to implement its programmes.
According to him, the body proposed to participate at the open championships later in the month in Abuja, but cannot do so.
Idaye said that the championships was planned to serve as a build up to the 19th National Sports Festival in Calabar, but had been postponed to 2015.
“We planned holding a competition in Abuja for which we approached some corporate organisations with proposals; they actually promised to support us, but up to date no positive response.
“The board deemed it necessary to organise a major competition that will feature all categories of fighters to prepare them for the festival.
“The festival was shifted to next year.
“ However, the postponement is not the problem, but the lack of response from our proposed sponsors and insufficient funds have affected our activities,’’ he said.
Idaye said that the federation would continue to intensify efforts towards improving the fortunes of the sport.
According to him, efforts will be made to reach out to others sport-loving individuals to bankroll some of the federation’s programmes.
Idaye, however, called on the government to do more for the development of the sport. (NAN)
