Lagos- The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Tuesday said it has arrested a mother of seven children and three men over alleged drug trafficking.
Mr Mitchel Ofoyeju, the spokesman of the agency, who made this known in a statement issued in Lagos, said that the agency also recovered drugs valued N374.6 million from them.
Ofoyeju said that the suspects were arrested at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, but he did not disclose the date of their arrest.
He said the suspects were caught with drugs weighing 41.63kg with an estimated street value of over N374.6 million.
“They consist of 36.68kg of methamphetamine and 4.95kg of cocaine.
“The drugs were hidden in security lamps, silicon sealants, foodstuff and luggage.
“Those arrested include a mother of seven children and three men,’’ he said.
The statement also quoted the chairman of the agency, Ahmadu Giade, as saying that the NDLEA Act should be amended with a view to having stiffer penalties for drug traffickers.
He said Giade made the statement at the agency’s management summit, adding that such law would help to prosecute traffickers and make them to forfeit their illegal proceeds from the drug trade.
“The proposed review is part of the efforts to reposition the NDLEA for enhanced performance and greater productivity,’’ Ofoyeju quoted Giade as saying. (NAN)
