Germany pushes cooperation on solar with North African countries

German Foreign minister Heiko Maas

Berlin – German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said that closer cooperation with North African countries in the energy sector could help energy security, in comments published on Friday.

These countries could become major energy exporters on the basis of their solar energy potential, Maas wrote in the magazine Wirtschaftswoche.

He proposed “new strategic partnerships,’’ adding that the German government was prepared to back investment by German entrepreneurs in renewal energy sources in developing economies.

“This will generate more energy security and fewer conflicts,’’ Maas said. (
