Lagos- The Courier Regulatory Department (CRD) of NIPOST on Friday closed two companies in Lagos that were operating courier services without licence.
The Head of CRD, Dr Simon Emeje, told newsmen during the clampdown in Lagos that four illegal operators were also closed down in Ilorin on Wednesday, Dec. 3.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the two illegal companies shut down in Lagos are ShippyMe located at 13, Hughes Avenue, Alagomeji, Yaba and DealDey at 17, Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos.
Those closed at Ilorin include Young Legacy Line located beside Femi Hospital, Unity Road.
Others are Watmus Transport Services at Ajase-Ipo Road, Offa Garage, Kasmag Line at 9X 37, Unity Road and Kwara State Transport Corporation, Ajase-Ipo Road, Offa Garage.
Emeje said that the clampdown was a national assignment and essential for the sanity of the courier sub-sector.
”We went on the exercise because we identified illegal courier operators who operate without licence.
”There is this aspect of online businesses that are forcefully coming into play and engaging in courier services with licence.
”The recent development in the courier sub-sector is that there is a diversification of business into the online services, hence, the need for registration,” he said.
The senior assistant post-master general said that there was the need for the clampdown because of the critical nature of the sub-sector to the nation’s economy.
He said that the courier sub-sector also needed to be sanitised in investors’ interest.
According to him, the sector is very viable, but only 20 per cent of the market has been tapped, while 80 per cent remained untapped.
”The asset worth of the industry is about N300 billion and there is need to protect and boost it.
”We are saying this to encourage investors both national and international to tap into the industry,” Emeje said. (NAN)
