NAIROBI – Chaloka Beyani, UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), on Wednesday urged Kenya to accelerate efforts to achieve a permanent solution for the country’s displaced population.
He said this during a nine day official visit to Nairobi that the end of displacement cannot be determined by a political decision but by reality.
“While we acknowledge government efforts, we differ on the methodology employed to achieve a durable solution,” he said.
Beyani said UN had agreed to work with the government on a bilateral basis and was of the view that once the IDP law was fully implemented it would address the problem.
He said as part of resettlement plans, last year the government gave cash grants of 4,600 dollars per households to the displaced.
Beyani said UN would prefer that the compensation be made on the basis of family size. (Xinhua/NAN)
