Abuja – The police on Wednesday arraigned an applicant, Mirabel Ibe, in a Karmo Upper Area Court, Abuja, for assaulting policeman and aiding other suspects to escape.
The police charged Ibe, who resides at Karmo, with causing hurt.
The Prosecution Counsel, Ijeoma Ukagha, told the court that Ibe attacked Insp. Thomas Nzemeke, who is attached to Utako Police Station Abuja on April 28.
She said while on task force duty, the police arrested 30 women, suspected to be Commercial Sex Workers .
Ukagha said that while Nzemeke was ordering the suspects to enter the police cell, the defendant attacked him using her fingernails on his face and allowed the other suspects to escape.
The prosecutor said the offence contravened the provisions of Sections 247 of the Penal Code.
After the charge was read to Ibe, she pleaded not guilty.
The Judge, Alhaji Inuwa Maiwada, in admitting Ibe to bail, ordered that the police to release her to her mother.
Maiwada also ordered that Ibe’s mother must deposit an affidavit confirming that she is the defendant’s mother.
He also ordered that Ibe’s mother must produce her on the next adjourned date of May 23.
