Ikeja – The police on Wednesday arraigned a vagrant, Jacob Gbenga, 18 and four minors in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly belonging to an unlawful society.
The police charged the defendants who reside in Mushin, a Lagos suburb with six counts of conspiracy, causing grievous harm, belonging to an unlawful society, breach of peace and threatening violence .
The Police Prosecutor, Insp Edet Akadu, told the court that the defendants committed the offence with some other persons, who are at large, on March 29 at Railway Station, Mushin.
Akadu said the defendants conducted themselves in a manner that was likely to breach the peace in Mushin.
“The defendants, who belong to different unlawful societies known as Unity Boys, Confidence Boys Cultist and Success Boys engaged in a street fight in Mushin.
“During the fight, they attacked one Fuad Yekini with a cutlass, cutting him on the head and right hand.
“They also inflicted injuries on one Ganiyu Akinwande, ” he said.
The offence he said, contravened the provisions of sections 42, 168, 245, 173, and 56 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 42 stipulates a seven-year imprisonment for unlawful society.
After the charge was read to them, they pleaded not guilty.
Magistrate, Mr K.O. Ogundare, admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N100, 000 each with two sureties each in like sum.
Ogundare ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed and should show evidence of two years tax payment to Lagos State Government .
He adjourned the case until June 5.
