NAIROBI – Kenya’s Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario is set to meet Football Kenya Federation (FKF) officials to resolve brewing dispute between the soccer ruling body and the its league management body.
Wario’s intervention would be with a view to quelling the impasse between the association and the body running Kenya’s top-flight league, Kenyan Premier League Ltd.
FKF and the league managers have been wrangling over the composition of next year’s Kenyan Premier League.
FKF wants the number of teams increased to 18 from 16, while KPL is sticking to the 16-team format.
Kenyan Premier League Ltd., a body simply known as KPL, is a company formed by the teams featuring in Kenya’s top-flight league to manage the league on behalf of the national federation, FKF.
KPL is opposing the proposed 18-team format, citing financial constraints and contractual obligations to league sponsors SuperSport and Kenya Breweries Limited.
KPL also cites player fatigue, saying an expanded league will translate into increased matches which leaves players fatigued at the end of the season.
But FKF is not convinced and is asking KPL to cut its administrative costs, reduce the number of tournaments it stages during the off-season and channel monies saved to players.
“With prudent financial management and cost cutting, KPL can manage an expanded 18-team league,’’ says FKF CEO Michael Esakwa.
FKF reminds KPL that as the national federation, it has the sole authority of determining the Kenyan Premier League format. (PANA/NAN)
