LAGOS – Gboyega Isiaka, a Patron of the Nigeria Judo Federation and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial candidate for the 2015 General Elections in Ogun, says that he will not be distracted by politics.
Isiaka told the News Agency of Nigeria of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on telephone that he will do everything within his means to take Judo to the level it should be in the country.
He added that one of his cardinal objectives was to expose Judokas to competitions that would sharpen their skills, and bring them at par with their contemporaries elsewhere.
“Even with my anticipated position in government, nothing will distract my passion for judo; rather, I will make sure that the sport is taken to a new level.
“I have always had a passion for the development of sports, particularly judo, and I am passionate to see our athletes compete favorably with their peers.
“Judo is already making waves in the country, but the idea is to improve the standard next year, so it’s going to be a remarkable year for judokas,’’ he said.
Isiaka also said that the federation would continue to collaborate with intending sponsors and well-meaning individuals, to popularise the sport, especially at the grassroots.
Meanwhile, Segun Gbayi, the athletes’ representative in the federation, has congratulated Isiaka for emerging as the winner of the PDP governorship primaries in Ogun.
“We are very happy with the success of our patron and we are more excited that he has pledged to continue to work for the growth of judo in Nigeria.’’
He added that with such commitment, athletes and technical officials would be encouraged to work harder, to enable the patron to achieve his objectives for the sport. (NAN)
