ABUJA – Prof. Michael Adikwu, the Vice-Chancellor, University of Abuja (UniAbuja), on Friday said that the institution would partner with the Chinese Embassy to set up a Chinese Language Department.
Adikwu said this when he received some Information Communication Technology (ICT) equipment donated to the school by the Chinese Embassy in Abuja.
The items include 12 computers, three printers and books on Chinese policies.
“One of the major problems of collaboration is that you must be able to understand the people you are collaborating with.
“We are talking about having a department that teaches Chinese language; we have spoken about it.
“The equipment they are talking about are ICT equipment, computers and printers what this means is that our students can now key more into e-learning.
“The entire world is going into ICT; in fact, any institution that is not ICT compliant is not an institution of the 21st century,’’ he said.
Adikwu said that for one to meet with global demands one must be ICT compliant; adding that UniAbuja wanted to train people who would be globally relevant not just for Nigeria.
On his part, Mr Zhang Bin, Charge d’ Affair of the Chinese Embassy, said that the donation was in furtherance of the existing cooperation between Nigeria and China.
He said the presentation was a way of improving collaboration between the two countries in the area of education.
“China and Nigeria enjoy a long standing friendship and cooperation and this cooperation has already expanded to other fields including education and culture.
“So, it is in the spirit of enhancing the level of cooperation in the field of education that this embassy wants to present some office equipment to the Abuja university.
“We hope that this will be helpful for the enhancement of the academic level of the university,’’ he said.
According to Bin, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, and the University of Lagos already have the Confucius institute for the teaching of Chinese language and culture. (NAN)
