ABUJA – Mr Ezekiel Oyemomi, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, has called on young women to empower themselves through skill acquisition.
He made the call on Tuesday in Abuja when he paid a courtesy call on Ms Onyeka Onwenu, Director- General, National Centre for Women Development (NCWD).
“There many skills women can acquire; they can become entrepreneurs; they can become employers of labour; they do not need to need to wait for white collar jobs.
“Instead of hoping for jobs that will take long before it comes, it is better for women to engage themselves in acquiring skills that can assist them in life,’’ he said.
Oyemomi explained that skill acquisition should not be limited to young women alone, adding that Nigerian youths irrespective of gender should also strive to acquire skill.
“The youths who make up the highest population of the country should acquire skill to reduce the unemployment rate in Nigeria,’’ he said.
He called on young women to avail themselves of the skill acquisition training provided by the NCWD.
Earlier in her remark, Ms. Onyeka Onwenu, the Director General, NCWD, stressed the need to empower Nigerian women because of its multiplier effects.
“When you uplift women, you uplift the whole nation,’’ she said, even as she lauded Oyemomi for propagating the activities of the centre.
Onwenu said that with the cooperation and assistance of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, the centre would realize its goals of empowering Nigerian women with skill acquisition. (NAN)
