Lagos- The Nigeria Professional Wrestling Federation (NPWF) on Tuesday said that the body would intensify its efforts toward increasing the profile of the sport in the coming year.
Olanrewaju Mohammed, the NPWF president, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the federation was determined to provide the needed platform for the sport to thrive in the country.
He said that the federation would organise regular championships and training for coaches and other technical officials.
According to Mohammed, the body has initiated plans to showcase its activities in some states in the coming year, as a way of repositioning professional wrestling.
“Professional wrestling is a money spinning sport in the U.S and other parts of the world, Nigeria should not be left out of the global trend.
“So, we are working seriously to increase the tempo of the sport and also provide the enabling environment for the sport to grow in the country,’’ he said.
The president said that the BRF Wrestlemania event which started in 2012 had further popularised the sport in the country.
Mohammed commended Gov. Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State for his support and contribution to the development of the sport.
He appealed to corporate bodies and individuals to sponsor some of its programmes in the coming year. (NAN)
