Abuja – The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) is collaborating with the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) to ensure safety of motorists during the ember months.
The FRSC Corps Marshal, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, said this during a press conference on Joint Stakeholders Forum organised by the two agencies on Tuesday in Abuja.
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the campaign is “Safety and Consumer Satisfaction in the Ember season”.
Oyeyemi said that the campaign would focus on the right of citizens and more enlightenment on ember months programmes for the motorists.
He said that the collaboration was to entrench best road use culture in Nigeria and further enforce the right of consumers in the road transport sector.
”The path of FRSC, by virtue of its responsibilities, and that of FCCPC cannot but cross due to the inherent need for balancing service delivery with subsisting standards.
”The FRSC understands the benefits in stake holding and has in place a robust system that has been quite formidable in moving the Corps forward.
“It is, therefore, yet a pleasure to partner with FCCPC in a bid to ensure that Nigerians derive maximum benefits from whatever service compact was entered into by consumers with producers of goods and services.
”FCCPC must indeed strive to build a formidable partnership that would put her in a proactive mode rather than reactive because once such relationship are established, monitoring and evaluation of establishments become routine and friendly,” he said.
Oyeyemi advised motorists to always avoid overloading and speeding to ensure their safety throughout the period of the Christmas and New Year celebrations and beyond.
The Chief Executive Officer of FCCPC, Mr Babatunde Irukera, commended FRSC for ensuring the safety of motorists in the country so far.
Irukera said that the collaboration was necessary to ensure free flow of cars during the ember months, saying that there was the need to enlighten those traveling and those conveying them.
“This is in an effort to curtail the escalating road traffic accidents especially during the festive period, to ensure safety of motorists all over the FCT in particular and the country in general.
“FCCPC is committed to engaging those who would travel and those who would convey them across the country and their safety need to be fully addressed.
“As such, we are today collaborating with FRSC to ensure full management of road accident, most especially the end of the year celebration, when more people travel across the country by road,” he said.
