Paris- No fewer than 15,000 travelers in the Savoy region of eastern France were forced to spend the night in emergency shelters after heavy snow made roads impassable, local officials said on Sunday.
The Savoy prefecture said thousands of drivers and passengers came to a standstill after snowfall blanketed the Alpine eastern regions.
It said it has led tourists and weekend travelers in Albertville, Chambery, Moutiers and Aix-les-Bains to take refuge in emergency stations.

The report added that some travelers had to spend the night in their vehicles.
Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve has urged motorists to postpone their travel plans.
According to him, those already in transit in the Alps should stop as soon as possible and look for a place to stay overnight. (dpa/NAN)
