Lagos. – Mr Adeyinka Amosu, the Director, Lagos Operations, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) on Tuesday commended the Journalist International Forum for Migration (JIFORM) for championing the crusade against irregular migration globally.
Amosu gave the commendation during a courtesy visit by the JIFORM members led by its President, Mr Abayomi Ajibola, to the FRCN in Lagos.
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the visit was to honour the FRCN director for his tremendous support for the 2019 JIFORM international conference held in Abuja in November.
Amosu, after receiving the JIFORM award, said that the FRCN viewed the campaign as an affirmative action to enlighten people on migration issues.
“If an average person is enlightened on migration policies and what irregular migration means, the risks faced during migration will reduce.
“People won’t fall for the deceit that gold is picked on the streets of Europe.
“I also pray JIFORM gets more media support because as elders say, `you can’t wink at a child in the dark’.
“JIFORM needs more media platforms to reach out to nations.
“Unfortunately, the media don’t project their own activities as much as they do with celebrities, Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), politicians, just to mention a few.
“However, because the irregular migration has done some damages to human existence, FRCN will continually render its support.
“Especially, when JIFORM’s content is priceless,” Amosu said.
The President of JIFORM, Ajibola Abayomi, in his response said the forum‘s dream include vigorous fight against child trafficking, adding that such activity was mostly pathetic.
Ajibola said that what should be happening was regular migration, adding that most migrants are not criminals.
“ However, JIFORM is ready to champion such advocacy to ensure that what should be happening is regular migration, because there are lots of benefits to it.
The JIFORM boss also expressed worry that some nations still exposed migrants to abuses.
“Migrants are potential economic developers. They deserve the right treatment as contained in the framework of international law and United Nations High Commission for Refugees,” Abayomi said.
JIFORM has over 150 members across the globe with a vision to equip people with right knowledge on regular and irregular migration.
