South Africa’s Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) has put a halt to all workshop related actions throughout South Deep mine where two miners recently died in a work-related accident, Gold Fields, the Johannesburg-listed gold miner said on Thursday.
The department came with this verdict after it completed an “in loco” inspection of the scene of the second accident which happened this week.
On Tuesday this week Gold Fields said another worker had died at its South Deep mine following an “industrial-type” mishap. This raised the number of deaths at the project to two in two weeks.
Gold Fields said the moratorium on all workshop-related activity on the mine will go on until the completion of a report about the incident that occurred on the mine.
This has effectively put a halt to all forms of production on the mine and Gold Fields said management was working closely with the department to identify the causes of the accident.
“There will be a deferral of approximately 300 kilograms (9,645ounces) of gold production by the end of this week. It is estimated that a further 200 kilograms (6,430 ounces) will be deferred due to the reassessing of working practices in all workshops and safety control systems on the mechanised mining fleet, in order to improve safety at South Deep,” Gold Fields said in a statement.
