CALABAR – The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Calabar on Monday sensitised officers and ratings of the Eastern Naval Command of the Nigerian Navy on defensive driving techniques.
Mr Daniel Itsoga, the Deputy Route Commander of the Corps in Calabar, said that it was important for personnel of the Navy to be educated on the use of road information signs.
Itsoga said that most road crashes occurred as a result of non-compliance with road information signs and speeding.
“As a driver, it is important for you to obey road information signs; these information are useful because they direct and lead a visitor to his destination,’’ he said.
According to him, the importance of the road information signs is that they help a visitor to locate

direction if he or she is entering a city for the first time.
Itsoga said that road accidents would not recognise immunity, uniform or personality, hence the need to obey simple road rules and regulations.
He urged Navy personnel to always have fire extinguisher in their vehicles and also to have the [pro_ad_display_adzone id=”8″]knowledge of using it.
“The offence of a driver not having a fire extinguisher is N5, 000 in the FRSC offence sheet.
“You must possess all these safety requirements and it is important for you to be cautious when
driving,’’ he said.
Itsoga also advised them to have the knowledge of using the first aid box in case of any road traffic crash.
Responding, Rear Adm Henry Babalola, the Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Naval Command, said that the programme was an initiative of the Nigerian Navy to educate its personnel on road safety tips.
Represented by Rear Adm Atiku Abdulkadir, the Chief Staff Officer of the Command, Babalola advised the officers to be cautious when driving.
He said that the programme was also meant to safe life, value, cost, and safety on the highways. (NAN)
