Abuja- Alhaji Muhammad Sani-Sidi, the Director-General, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), says the agency is giving priority to addressing humanitarian situations and displacement in the country.
Sani-Sidi said this on Tuesday in Abuja during the 12th humanitarian coordination meeting to review the current displacement and humanitarian situations in the North-East of the country.
The director-general, who was represented by Mr Zanna Muhammad, the Director, Planning, Research, and Forecasting, appreciated the assistance of developing partners, including the International Office of Migration (IOM).
“We appreciate the assistance of the IOM, who have helped us in collating the data of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).”
He said that the meeting was held on a regular basis so that all key players, local and international organisations, as well as respective Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), could exchange ideas on how to tackle the humanitarian challenges confronting the nation.
He further urged all stakeholders to cooperate and collaborate in order to evolve suggestions on how to improve performance.

On the intervention of the agency in the north east, he said that NEMA was doing a lot to ensure proper healthcare, education of children, provision of water, sanitation, hygiene and security in the camps.
In her remark, Stephanie Daviot, the Project Officer, IOM, said that the data contained in the report presented to NEMA, was the outcome of the assessment conducted as part of the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) programme.
She said that the objective of the programme was to support the Federal Government in establishing a comprehensive system to collect and disseminate data on IDPs.
According to Daviot, this will help in strengthening the capacity of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) offices, Red Cross, and other partners in the field to undertake IDPs assessment in a unified and systematic manner.
The News agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that representatives of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Wateraid attended the meeting.
