ABUJA – The third edition of the Chika Chukwumerije Sports Foundation (CCSF) taekwondo tournament is to hold in Abuja from Oct. 23 to Oct. 24.

announcement in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Thursday.[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”10″]
NAN recalls that the 3rd edition of the CCSF, slated to hold from Oct. 11 to Oct. 12, 2014 was cancelled due to the Ebola virus outbreak in West Africa.
Chukwumerije said the new date for the 2014 edition which would now hold in 2015 was reached with the participating countries to ensure that everybody was carried along.
“There was a raging debate among stakeholders as to the best date to host the next edition to assuage the disappointment of eager fans.
“Some wanted the tournament to be held in the first quarter of 2015, while another group wanted it shifted to its traditional month of October.
“Another group argued that the tournament be held twice in 2015; that is the 3rd edition to be hosted in the first quarter of 2015 while the fourth quarter holds in October.
“Eventually, the twin issues of Nigeria’s election coming up in February 2015 and the effect of Ebola still being felt in some West African countries ensured the October lobbyists won the day.’’
He stated that the tournament which had afforded local athletes an opportunity to compete with their international counterparts would attract over 400 participants from different countries.
Chukwumerije also noted that a taekwondo team with an average age of 16 years had been put together from where athletes would be groomed for the country.
He said that the team would be officially unveiled in August before the commencement of the 3rd edition of the CCSF, opening in October. (NAN)
