Lagos – Tony Osheku, the Technical Director of the Lagos State Athletics Association, on Friday said that the association identified new talents at the Lagos State Secondary Schools Sports Festival.
Osheku told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the discovered athletes would be used to strengthen track and field events in the state.
“I have seen a lot of talents in this tournament; if they are groomed, they will be used to rebuild the sport.[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”10″]
“I cannot give you the number of talents discovered, but they are many; more important is that all the athletes gave a good account of themselves.
“I am really impressed with their performances,” he said.
Osheku said that there was the need for a development programme for the athletes to enable athletics to regain its glory and do the country proud at international meets.
“If a well thought-out programme is put in place, athletics will regain its lost glory,’’ Osheku a Consultant to the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, told NAN.
He said that Nigeria had more potential waiting to be discovered.
“Nigeria is blessed with talents; it is through grassroots sports development programmes like this that hidden talents can be discovered.
“There must be programmes in place to further expose them,’’ he said.
