BAUCHI – The Bauchi State Chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) said it had embarked on a campaign to sensitise its members against engaging in election malpractices.
Alhaji Suleiman Adamu, the union’s chairman disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bauchi on Tuesday.
Adamu explained that NURTW would play a critical role in the coming general elections, following a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) it signed with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He said that the union would transport all INEC staff and election materials to the various polling units across the country.
Adamu said the sensitisation had become necessary to warn members against participating in any form of electoral malpractices or violence during and after the elections.
The chairman said the union had made the campaign a routine exercise to consistently inform and educate members on new developments regarding the elections so as not to be taken unaware.
“Because of the vital role we have to play, there was the need to consistently sensitise our members and warn them against being used by politicians to divert election materials or participate in any form of election malpractices or violence.
“Elections in this country have always been characterised with all sort of electoral fraud, such as snatching of ballot boxes, diversion of election materials, thuggery and violence among others.
“I guarantee you, with the series of meetings we had with INEC officials, our members would not be involved in any of these.
“This is because we have been enlightened on the `dos-and-don’ts` during and after elections, with our role clearly spelt out,” Adamu said.
He said that as a critical stakeholder with more than 10,000 members in Bauchi state, the union would play its role effectively for the success of the nation’s elections. (NAN)
