ABUJA – Grassroots Cooperative Nigeria (GCN), a pro-democracy group, says it would soon launch a nationwide grassroots campaign against corruption, insecurity, poverty and diseases such as HIV and Ebola,
Mr Diepreye Amadein, the National Coordinator of the group, made this known on Monday in Abuja during a meeting of the national executives of the group.
Amadein said that the group would also mobillise Nigerians for the emergence of credible candidates to contest the 2015 general elections.
He said that it had become imperative to mobilise people at the grassroots against factors capable of undermining the nation’s democracy.
“We will soon embark on a nationwide tour to sensitise people at the grassroots more on HIV and other killer diseases.
“We will also launch a nationwide crusade against corruption and take the campaign to the grassroots, to enlighten them against corruption and corrupt leaders.
“We will also mobilise the grassroots to support only credible candidates in the 2015 general elections. ‘’
Amadein also stressed the need to for all well meaning Nigerians to cooperate in the fight against terrorism, noting that the crime was against all Nigerians irrespective of their political affiliations and religious background.

“We have observed with dismay the turbulent situation the country is passing through now, characterised by hostile and unconstructive opposition, coupled with the challenge of terrorist activities.
“As you are all aware, terrorists have caused massive and wanton destruction of lives and property at the grassroots, especially in the North East part of the country, posing a serious challenge to our emerging democracy.’’
He appealed to Nigerians, irrespective of political affiliation, religious and ethnic background and differences, to collaborate and reunite the nation.
“We appeal to those who are bombing and killing Nigerians to desist from such acts because the act is a threat to national unity.
“We commend the president for some of the measures adopted in combating crime, and we urge all stakeholders to support him to end insurgency in the country.’’
In his remarks, Alhaji Agidi Ayinde, the Political Adviser to the group, said the goal of GCN was to sensitise Nigerians at the grassroots and even those in the Diaspora on issues affecting development in Nigeria.
According to him, these factors are capable of hindering people at the grassroots from having access to the dividends of democracy.
Ayinde noted that efforts were being made to put the nation on a path of accelerated development with a view to building a sustainable future for Nigerians.
“We are poised to assist the government to rebuild the confidence of our people and bring lasting hope to all Nigerians,’’ he said. (NAN)
