SOKOTO – Prof. Aminu Mika’ilu, former Vice Chancellor of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (Sokoto State), on Saturday called for value re-orientation for Nigerian youths to enable them play leadership roles in future.
Mika’ilu made the call at the opening of a four-day Zonal Capacity Building Workshop organised by the National Council of Muslim Youths (NACOMYO) in Sokoto.
“The youths should also be encouraged to have good characters so that people of next generations will see them as examples.
“They should always focus on people like Shehu Usman Danfodio who left good reputation for the present generation’’, he added.
He called on the participants to utilise the knowledge they acquired during the workshop for the benefit of the society.
Earlier, the Vice President of the association, Alhaji Ahmad Jumba, said lack of selfless leadership, insecurity and other social vices within Muslim Ummah in particular were unacceptably high.
“We post worse social indices – poverty, maternal mortality, illiteracy, unemployment and under development, among others.’’
He said every community must make sure that its youths were well prepared to handle the tasks expected of them to ensure sustainable development and progress.
Jumba explained that “the workshop was aimed at correcting the image of Islam that had wrongly been portrayed by some Muslims and non-Muslims.
“This is to provide a platform for the emergence of a virile, progressive, agenda-driven and responsive Muslims in Nigeria.”
Also, Chairman of the Zakkat and Endowment Committee in Sokoto state, Alhaji Muhammad Maidoki, advised Muslim organisations to put more efforts at preaching.
