The British Government has reportedly apologised to Mr. Peter Obi, Nigeria’s Labour Party presidential candidate, over his illegal detention and harassment at Heathrow Airport, London.
The apology came following the admittance of an immigration official to have wrongly handed Obi a detention note in a search of a man who impersonated him to commit forgery and identify theft, reports The Nigerian Voice news portal.
British authorities said the uncomplimentary treatment he received was “completely unacceptable” and thence issued a personal apology, the report says.
“Frankly, the Immigration Official’s action has been appalling – and we are sorry,” a report by The Nigerian Voice quotes British immigration authorities as saying in a personal apology to Obi.
It would be recalled that Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, was stopped and questioned at the airport by the United Kingdom immigration office last Friday, April 7. He was, however, allowed to go following protests by Nigerians at the airport.
