Abuja- The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on Saturday ratified June 24 to June 27 for its Triennial Delegates Conference in Abuja.
The union stated this in a communique signed by the National Secretary of the union, Mr Shuaibu Leman, at the end of the NEC meeting of the union in Abuja.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that in addition to other business, delegates at the triennial conference are expected to elect new officers of the association.
The communiqué appealed to all state councils to update their financial status to be qualified to participate in the conference.
It, however, condemned the situation where journalists were still owed salaries and other allowances by their employers in spite of several persuasions for payment by respective media houses.
On suspension of some journalists by the union, the communiqué explained that NEC empowered the National Secretariat to lift such suspension after clearance from the affected state councils.
“NEC appealed to INEC and security agencies on the need for synergy with journalists throughout the election periods for effective election coverage, ‘’ it said.
The NEC also condemned the unethical contents of political materials that were being broadcast by media houses ahead of the 2015 general elections.

It stated that such materials were capable of heating up the polity and appealed to regulatory agencies including the National Broadcasting Commission to rise up to their responsibilities.
The NEC expressed satisfaction with the performance and conduct of journalists in the country, especially under the present political dispensation.
It, however, warned journalists to avoid any act that could lead to professional misconduct.
The union also advised politicians to desist from politics of hate and abusive language.
It lauded the army for its doggedness in curtailing the challenge of insurgency in North eastern part of the country.
The NUJ also urged the Federal Government to intensify effort toward rehabilitation of internally-displaced persons nationwide. (NAN)
