ENUGU – No fewer than 400 officers and men of the Federal Road Safety Commission in Enugu state would be deployed for special patrol and public enlightenment in motor parks during Easter celebrations.
The Enugu Sector Commander of the Commission, Mr David Mendie told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Enugu that the exercise would hold between April 1 and 8.
Mendie said the week-long patrol would feature vehicular control in major congestion-prone areas while mobile courts would sit on major corridors to try arrested motorists.
“We will embark on Easter Special Operations to effectively manage the anticipated traffic situation during the festive period.
“This is to check reckless driving, disregard for traffic rules and regulations by motorists.
“This is in line with the Corps’ 2015 strategic goals of 20 per cent reduction in road traffic crashes and 30 per cent reduction in fatalities,’’ he said.
He told NAN that the unusual increase in the volume of traffic that associated with festive periods made it imperative to scale up patrol activities during the Easter celebration.
“At periods like this, motorists, especially transporters are in a hurry to make round trips and more returns each day. They disobey traffic rules with the likely consequence of crashes.
“This exercise is not revenue generation drive but to provide effective traffic management, ensure safe and smooth travels during the festive period and beyond,’’ he said.
Mendie called on drivers to be more cautious during the festive period as the anticipated high volume of traffic might cause some road users to take wrong actions that could lead to accidents.
He urged motorists to apply defensive driving by anticipating the wrong decision of other road users to ensure a safe trip.
