The Agojeju-Odo community in Omala Local Government Area of Kogi State was devastated by an attack on Thursday, resulting in the tragic loss of 19 lives and injuries to several others.
According to reports, the violence erupted amid a conflict between militia groups in neighboring Benue State and bandits, leading to the assault on several towns including Agojeju-Odo, Ajokpachi-Odo, Bagaji, and surrounding areas.
Retired Commodore Jerry Omodara, the Special Adviser on Security to Governor Usman Ododo, confirmed the incident, labeling the massacre as callous, unacceptable, and condemnable. Governor Ododo has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the matter.
Security measures have been intensified in the affected areas, with security operatives deployed to maintain peace and order. The situation is now reportedly calm, but the aftermath of the attack has left a trail of destruction, including damage to property such as houses, vehicles, and crops.
The police in Kogi State, through their spokesman SP Williams Ovye-Aya, assured that a tactical response team comprising police, military, and vigilante groups has been deployed to the area to prevent further violence. Investigations are underway to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
