ABUJA (Sundiata Post) – In what has become a shameful reoccurrence amid legion of unjustifiable excuses, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), yesterday, admitted yet another collapse of the national grid but attributed it to a fire outbreak.
The disturbing incident, which has occurred twice this month, threw homes and businesses into darkness for several hours.
The latest collapse came barely a week after the controversial review of tariff on Band A classification by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
But in a statement, TCN said that at 02:41hrs today, April 15, 2024, a fire erupted at the Afam V 330kV bus bar coupler, leading to the tripping of units at Afam III and Afam VI. This, it noted, resulted in a sudden generation loss of 25MW and 305MW respectively, destabilising the grid and causing a partial collapse.
“During the incident, the Ibom Power Plant was isolated from the grid and was supplying parts of the Port Harcourt Region. This further minimised the effect of the system disturbance. TCN confirms that the affected section of the grid has been fully restored and stabilised.
“TCN reaffirms its commitment to enhancing the resilience and reliability of the national grid and pledges to continue investing in measures aimed at strengthening the grid infrastructure,” it said.
