The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State, Charles Ugwuh, has tendered his resignation from the party, effective May 22, 2024. In a letter addressed to the national chairman of the party, Umar Damagum, dated April 22, 2024, Ugwuh cited the prevalence of impunity and disregard for due process among high-profile party leaders as his reason for departure.
Ugwuh recalled his initial acceptance of the chairman position in August 2020, motivated by a desire to rejuvenate the party and restore hope to its disillusioned members following the judicial nullification of the PDP government in Imo State on January 14, 2020. He lamented recent instances of internal opposition and sabotage, such as his exclusion from the NEC meeting held in Abuja on April 18, 2024, allegedly orchestrated by influential party leaders through frivolous court injunctions.
Expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve the party he co-founded in 1998, Ugwuh’s resignation follows a similar decision by former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha, who also cited concerns over the party’s internal dynamics.
In addition to Ugwuh, several other prominent PDP members in Imo State have recently resigned, including former deputy governor Gerald Irona, former Vice Chancellor Prof. Jude Njoku, former lawmaker Ikenga Mayor Eze, former Chief of Staff Vin Udokwu, PDP State Youth Leader Evang Anozie Udenwa, as well as former State House of Assembly candidates Sonny-Unachukwu John and Pius Omah from Isiala Mbano constituency.
