Abuja (Sundiata Post) – The Special Adviser on Intergovernmental Affairs to Governor Mutfwang of Plateau State, Rt. Hon. Abubakar yahaya-kanam, during a parley with Officials of UN-Women at the weekend in Jos, the Plateau State capital, said that to encourage and have more girls in schools their security must be guaranteed.
Yahaya-Kanam stated this against the ugly recurring incidents where the girls are constantly being kidnapped in schools most especially in northern Nigeria.
Although Plateau State has not recorded such ill fated incidents, Yahaya-Kanam advocated for proactive measures to be taken to forestall such occurrence in the future.
He said while he will advise the government on measures to be taken to safeguard primary and secondary schools in the State, he is appealing to the UN-Women to support the noble course of safeguarding schools of the girl-child in the State.
In company of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs and the Majority Leader of the Plateau State House of Assembly, the Governor’s Aide said we must never, never make schools the instrument of war, nor battlefields for terror.
According to him: “I feel dismayed that at this time in our lives we have come to a situation where girls’ school and education have been turned into instruments of war.
“We must do everything possible, working with the international community, working with the private sector and working with good people like yourselves to ensure that our children are able to learn in a safe environment,” he added.
Advancing safe access to education for girls in Plateau and Nigeria, Yahaya-Kanam said solving this issue is critical to closing the global education gap and essential to future prosperity.
