“The Rivers State Police Command has provided clarification regarding the presence of its personnel at the State House of Assembly Quarters, emphasizing their role in maintaining peace and order.
Grace Iringe-Koko, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, stated in a press release in Port Harcourt that the deployment of officers is solely aimed at preventing any potential disruption of law and order within the premises.
The sight of over 35 fully armed police officers and their vehicles barricading the entrance gates to the assembly quarters on the Port Harcourt-Aba expressway raised concerns on Friday.
This development followed a visit by the state governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, to assess the condition of the buildings. However, occupants, believed to be state lawmakers loyal to Chief Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, particularly led by Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule, contested the necessity for renovation.
In response, Iringe-Koko clarified that the police presence is purely precautionary, aimed at upholding law and order. The statement reiterated the command’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all residents, urging everyone to continue their lawful activities without apprehension.”
