The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has declared a sit-at-home on May 30, 2024, to commemorate Biafra Heroes Day. IPOB’s media and publicity secretary, Emma Powerful, emphasized the importance of this day, urging residents in Biafra territory to observe the order.
In a statement, Powerful reiterated IPOB’s significant role in Biafra-related matters, stating, “The remembrance of all those who fought for Biafra freedom and sovereignty remains imperative, and no government or security agency has any authority to harass any innocent person during that event.”
IPOB called on state governors within Biafra Land to ensure the safety of people and properties on this day. The organization stressed that the Nigerian government cannot prevent them from mourning or remembering their heroes who died during the genocidal war of 1967-1970.
The statement detailed the comprehensive shutdown planned for May 30, 2024, from 6 am to 6 pm, covering all social activities including markets, schools, banks, government and private businesses, as well as transport services by air, sea, and land. Exceptions are made for critical services such as healthcare, fire services, hospitals, medical workers, and journalists.
IPOB also warned against criminal elements using the event to harass people, urging residents to gather necessary supplies ahead of time to avoid falling victim to violence. “The Nigerian government and the enemies of Biafra will attack them and claim they are IPOB and ESN,” the statement warned.
The organization affirmed that the commemoration of Biafran Heroes and Heroines, including international supporters like Bruce Mayrock, and notable figures such as General Phillip Efiong and Chief Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, will continue annually. IPOB encouraged Biafrans in the diaspora to obtain permits for rallies in their respective countries to raise awareness about the Biafra genocidal war.
Emma Powerful concluded with a message of resilience and determination, stating, “Our people must understand that Biafra is coming. We have crossed the rubicon, and nothing will make us change our mind or diminish our resolve towards this fight for Biafra liberation.”
The sit-at-home declaration underscores IPOB’s commitment to honoring those who sacrificed for Biafra’s cause and their ongoing struggle for recognition and sovereignty.
