The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Dele Ezeoba, said on Thursday that the Nigerian Navy was committed to combating crimes in the nation’s maritime space and across the Gulf of Guinea.
Ezeoba said this after inaugurating some projects at the naval bases in Oghara and Sapele in Delta.
He said to achieve the goal, the navy had invested in human capacity development and Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
Ezeoba inaugurated ICT centre, e-library, computer engineering school and engine room stimulation training centre at the Nigerian Navy Engineering College (NNEC) Sapele.
He said that in spite of challenges, the navy would continue to deliver on its mandate.
Ezeoba said that the projects would add value to depth of training in the college.
He said the projects were in line with today’s global environment which was ICT-driven.
On the commissioned engineering training stimulation centre, Ezeoba said it was first of its kind in the country.
He navy chief said the centre was a replica of the processes that guided the proper maintenance schedule and management of the machinery onboard any ship.
“This includes the main engine, generator and the auxiliaries. What it does is that it provides real time opportunity for the students to understand how this system and sub-system function.
“In this regards, they can make mistakes without any damage to the system if they were to do their practical onboard the ship itself.
“It provides the opportunity that defines the rudiment, training, maintenance, support and above all, the day-to-day system management of the equipment.
“The Nigerian Navy is in tune with the reality of the 21st century which is practically ICT- driven. We are playing in the big league.
“If we have the platform in the right number and in the right makes, we will continue to deliver our mandate which is to reduce illegality in our maritime space.
“This also gives us opportunity to develop this institute as a regional centre for training across the Gulf of Guinea,” he said.
