LAGOS – The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) would on April 21 flag-off the IAAF/Nestle Kids’ Athletics Development Project under its School/Youth programme.
This is contained in a statement by IAAF on its website on Tuesday.
IAAF said that the event would hold at the Sport Accord Convention in London.
“It will be demonstrated on Tuesday April 21 at the Sport Accord Convention, which takes place this year in the Expo Centre in the Sochi Winter Olympic Park.
“IAAF/Nestle Kids’ Athletics is one of the biggest grassroots development programmes in the world of sports.
“It will be introduced to the annual gathering of more than 2,500 representatives from the sport industry,” it stated.
It said that Sport Accord is the umbrella organisation for Olympic and non-Olympic international sports federations as well as organisers of multi-sports games.
“The demonstration event, which will be held from 1200-1400 local time immediately in front of the Expo Centre, will be attended by IAAF President Lamine Diack and two 800m running greats.
“Their names are Wilson Kipketer, Denmark’s three-time world champion and Russia’s 2004 Olympic champion, Yuriy Borzakovskiy,” it said.
It noted that six teams made up of 90 children, aged 12-years-old and drawn from schools in Sochi, would take part in the IAAF/Nestle Kids’ Athletics event.[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”10″]
“Created in 2005 and since 2012 partnered by Nestle Healthy Kids’, Kids’ Athletics is a worldwide sports development programme with the mission to make Athletics the number one physical activity in schools.
“The IAAF’s objectives for Kids’ Athletics has so far been activated in more than 120 of the IAAF’s 212 national Member Federations worldwide.
“Promoting a balanced and healthy lifestyle, and attracting the potential sports stars of tomorrow,” it said.
According to IAAF, Kids’ Athletics is one of the biggest grassroots development programmes in the world of sports.
It explained that the IAAF aims to popularise athletics in the six areas through a programme of several competitions called “A Team Event for Children”, which comprises of three event groups:
IAAF said the event groups are the sprinting/running, jumping and throwing.
It added that there are three age categories targeted by the programme which comprises of seven to eight years, nine to 10 years and 11-12 years. (NAN)
