Abuja (Sundiata Post) – A Nigerian based American, Osinigwe Ezenwanyi Vera Ikokwu, has said a recent research conducted has indicated that over 50 per cent of Nigerian elderly individuals are either abandoned, neglected and uncared for, leading to a high rate of vulnerability with a resultant end of avoidable death.
Ikokwu said this situation is not only frightening but disrespectful as the elderly deserve to be appreciated for the nurturing role they played in molding leaders of today.
Taking steps to address the unfortunate trend, the Nigerian born philanthropist floated a foundation named the Heavenly Elderly Charity Arena (HECHARENA), aimed at bridging the gap by putting smiles on the faces of the indigents and suffering elderly in the Nigerian society.
Launched in Enugu Nigeria recently, the foundation seeks to inject over N2 billion in the long run in tackling the challenges. But however, N20 million has been earmarked to kick start the process in the short run, our correspondent reports.
“Over 50% of elderly individuals in vulnerable communities are abandoned, neglected, and uncared for, leading to high death rates”, Ikokwu said while delivering her address at the launch.
“This is a crucial issue, as the elderly are often in need of care and support. Abandonment and vulnerability can lead to various physical and emotional challenges, including poverty, poor health, and social isolation.
“The foundation aims to address this issue by providing comprehensive care and creating a nurturing environment for the elderly”, Ikokwu had said during flag-off.
She continued: “The initiative stemmed from my appreciation for charity, instilled by my Christian-socialist family background and my love for our parents. The Foundation’s Board of Trustees would play a vital role in achieving its objectives, which include promoting enhanced health and welfare sustainability for the needy”, she said.
Consequently, exploring the issues of vulnerable and abandoned elderly individuals in Nigeria it would require a multi-faceted approach, our reporter said
However, in an interaction with Ikokwu, she enumerated some ways her team has explored in addressing the issue.
According to her: “Research and data collection. Gathering statistics and stories to understand the scope and root causes of the problem. Community engagement with local communities, elderly individuals, and their families to understand their experiences and challenges.
“Policy analysis by examining existing policies and laws related to elderly care and identifying gaps or areas for improvement. Stakeholder collaboration by bringing together government agencies, NGOs, community organizations, and healthcare providers to discuss solutions.
“Media awareness by using the media platforms to raise awareness about the issue aimed at promoting empathy and understanding.
“Support services by establishing or supporting services that provide food, shelter, healthcare, and social support to vulnerable elderly individuals.
“Advocacy for policy changes and legislation that protect the rights and well-being of the elderly, as well as cultural sensitivity which seeks to address cultural and societal norms that may contribute to the abandonment of elderly individuals.
She said by exploring the issues from these angles, the Foundation can work towards creating a more supportive and inclusive environment for elderly individuals in Nigeria.
The Foundation also includes providing educational support to indigent students, our correspondent reports.
