ABUJA (Sundiata Post) – In a major advancement for Nigeria’s power sector, the Federal Government and FGN Power Company (FGNPC) have signed a major contract valued at $118,148,469.72. This contract will fund the construction and rehabilitation of over 2,670 kilometers of distribution lines, including 33kV, 11kV, and 400V circuits, throughout the country.
The signing ceremony, held yesterday in Abuja, featured remarks from Chief Adebayo Adelabu, Minister of Power.
He underscored that this initiative is designed to complement ongoing mid-stream transmission projects, aimed at securing efficient power delivery to residential, commercial, and industrial areas across Nigeria.
“This project represents a pivotal step towards our commitment to providing reliable and sustainable electricity to all Nigerians,” Minister Adelabu stated. He expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with leading industry partners, Elsewedy Electric and Power China, to achieve these ambitious goals.
FGNPC’s Managing Director, Mr. Kenny Anuwe, highlighted the strategic importance of the partnership. “We are excited to join forces with Elsewedy and Power China on this transformative initiative. Their expertise and dedication to excellence are critical for the success of this project. Siemens, despite its technological strengths, does not specialize in distribution lines, making our collaboration with Elsewedy a strategic choice. Their proven track record in Egypt reassures us of the high standards and efficiency we expect,” Anuwe said.
The project will encompass the construction of 687 kilometers of new distribution lines and the rehabilitation of 1,983 kilometers of existing infrastructure. FGNPC has closely collaborated with Enugu and Benin Distribution Companies (DisCos) and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to ensure that the project meets industry standards and regulatory requirements.
Elsewedy Electric’s Country Manager, Mr. Islam Isharawy, expressed pride in contributing to Nigeria’s energy ambitions. “We are honored to lend our expertise to this significant project, which represents a major upgrade to Nigeria’s power distribution infrastructure,” Isharawy said.
Mr. Tino Dong, Vice President for Central and West Africa at Power China, reaffirmed the company’s commitment. “Power China fully supports the President’s vision for the power sector and is dedicated to delivering high-quality and reliable power solutions. We look forward to a successful collaboration with FGNPC and Elsewedy to enhance power distribution across Nigeria.”
FGN Power Company (FGNPC), a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) created to implement the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI), is tasked with addressing infrastructure gaps in Nigeria’s energy sector. The company’s mission is to invest in comprehensive solutions that will provide reliable and incremental energy to Nigerian consumers.
This contract marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to modernize its power infrastructure and ensure consistent and improved electricity supply nationwide.
