The #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria Organizing Committee has called on President Bola Tinubu to remove the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, following the killing of peaceful protesters.
This demand was made during a candlelight symposium held at the Rights House in Ikeja, Lagos State, on Friday.
The event was organized in memory of those who lost their lives during the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests. The committee, operating from Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park in Ojota, Lagos, had earlier declared three days of mourning for the victims.
A member of the committee, who is also the National Spokesperson for the Youth Rights Campaign, emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating that more than 40 people were killed during the protests across the country. “We are demanding the sacking of the Inspector General of Police,” he stated.
Amnesty International also released a statement on Friday, August 2, detailing the states where the killings occurred. It reported that six people were killed in Suleja, Niger State, with many others severely injured. In Maiduguri, four people were killed, and three more were reported dead in Kaduna.
Amnesty International urged Nigerian authorities to conduct an impartial and effective investigation into these incidents and to ensure that any security personnel responsible for the alleged use of deadly force are held accountable through a fair trial.
Since August 1, Nigerians have been protesting against economic hardship, bad governance, and hunger. The protests are set to culminate in a one-million-man march across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory on Saturday, August 10.
