Sundiata Post – Another key bridge in the Kursk area of Russia has been attacked by Ukrainian forces with the intention of cutting off supplies to Russian forces defending against a counteroffensive by Kyiv.
This has been the second bridge in the area to be targeted since Friday, which raises questions about Russia’s capacity to fortify its border regions.
The latest attack, confirmed by Ukrainian Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk, focused on a bridge over the Seym River in the village of Zvannoye. Video footage circulating online shows a plume of smoke billowing from the bridge following a powerful explosion.
Although the exact timing and scope of the attack have not been publicly confirmed, prominent Russian military bloggers, including the highly influential War Gonzo project, have acknowledged the attack on Ukraine. According to “Rybar,” a blogger with ties to the Russian defence ministry, the bridge has suffered significant damage. Large cars can no longer cross the bridge, he said, even if it is still partially operational.
This most recent attack coincides with Ukraine’s assertion that, since beginning its counteroffensive on August 6, it has retaken over 80 villages covering 1,150 square kilometres in the Kursk region. Since the start of the war, Kyiv has made the most substantial invasion into Russian territory with this operation.
Despite the Ukrainian advances, some pro-Russian military analysts, like Yuri Podolyaka, maintain that the situation in Kursk remains relatively stable. However, he acknowledges the strategic importance of the remaining bridges over the Seym and Psyol rivers, predicting that Ukraine will likely attempt to seize control of these crucial crossings in the coming days.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to the troops involved in both the Kursk and eastern front operations, urging Western allies to expedite the delivery of promised military aid. “Our operation in the Kursk region is still inflicting losses on the Russian army and the Russian state, their defence industry and their economy,” Zelenskiy stated, emphasizing the need for continued support.
Meanwhile, Russia has vowed to retaliate with decisive force, branding the Ukrainian counteroffensive as a “major provocation.”
